Colette's Birthplace

Colette was born on January 28, 1873 in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye

in the family home at 8, rue de l’Hospice (now rue Colette). She spent a joyful childhood and adolescence there, surrounded by loving parents, her enigmatic sister Juliette, and two brothers, Achille and Léo, affectionately nicknamed "the wild ones," whom she later brought to life in touching literary sketches.

Upper Garden and Lower Garden — it was alongside her mother Sido that she developed a deep love for nature and animals, as well as a keen sense of observation that became the hallmark of her writing.

Colette's spirit still lingers under autumn foliage and red-hued pollarded trees.

"I spent ten years of wild wanderings, conquests, and discoveries in these woods; the day I must leave them will bring great sorrow."
In her book "La Maison de Claudine", Colette lovingly describes the paths of Puisaye — between river, forest and pond — especially magical in autumn.
